Context
Brothers for Excellence is the student organization behind Hunter College's Black Male Initiative, supporting Black men through mentorship and academic programming.
The problem
What it needed to solve
Information about the organization was scattered, so a student who wanted to join had no obvious place to find out what it does or when it meets.
A single destination organized around what a prospective member actually needs: what this is, who runs it, what's happening, and how to join.
Contribution
My role in the work
- Structured the navigation around the member journey rather than the org chart — about, gallery, calendar, staff, resources, join.
- Built responsive layouts for phone, tablet, and desktop.
- Used semantic structure and readable hierarchy so the content works with assistive technology.
Decisions
Key decisions
- Opened with photography of actual members instead of stock imagery — for a community organization, the people are the value proposition.
- Gave “Join BMI” a persistent place in the navigation so the primary action is never more than one click away.
- Kept navigation labels plain so a first-time visitor can orient without guessing.

- Responsive content sections designed across viewports.
- Semantic page structure supporting scanning and assistive technology.
Outcome
What exists today
The organization has a live public site for reaching students, sharing its calendar, and taking new members.
